Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) Regs. 2001 If your company stores oil, you may be aware of the Government Regulations that came into force in September 2001. For the first part the Regulations stipulated that any oil stored in high risks locations would need a secondary containment area which would be impervious to oil and water, should the contents of the primary container be breached. The secondary containment area needed to hold either 110% of the contents of the primary container, or, if there were a number of containers within a certain area, 25% of their aggregate storage capacity, whichever was the greater. The deadline for compliance of these storage areas was September 2003. The second part of the Regulations stated that by September 2005 all* oil storage vessels required a secondary containment area regardless of location.
